Life Instyle Melbourne 2009

Life Instyle is a boutique trade event that showcases a diverse range of design oriented homewares, gift, lifestyle and kids products. This year i had the pleasure of helping my friend alister, who was there to promote his jewellery and accessories brand- Malachi Alister Yiap.

There were heaps of beautiful designer products, including "First Instyle"- a section dedicated to showcasing the works of up and coming local designers.

JMGA Graduate Metal XII 2010

As part of the Jewellers and Metalsmiths Group of Australia (JMGA) Biennial Conference held in Perth this year (9-11 April 2010), Graduate Metal XII is an exhibition featuring works of graduating jewellery and metal students from Australia, Asia and South Africa.

I am excited to be part of this exhibition and also to be attending the conference with talks from some of the most influential contemporary jewellery makers such as karl fritsch, helen britton, lisa walker, and elizabeth turrell.

Exhibition opens: 4.00 pm

Design Now! opens at Melbourne Museum

Design Now! 2009 has just opened at the Melbourne Museum, moving from the Object Gallery in Sydney. The exhibition will run until the 22nd of November 2009. Be sure to visit the exhibition during its display!

I Make Stuff: the beta edition

As part of Craft Victoria's month about making, 'Craft Cubed' is a new annual festival of experimental, skilled and ideas-based craft and design. The theme for this year's festival is CITY|COUNTRY, and it starts from 1 August- 12 September 2009 with the opening on Friday 31 July, 6pm at Craft Victoria- 31 Flinders Lane, Melbourne.

Taking part in this festival, creators of 'Handmadelife' Beck Jobson and Ramona Barry have come up with a 140 page full coloured book titled: "I Make Stuff" which contains interviews with 29 makers from around the world.

I am pleased to have had the opportunity to take part in this project and have my work featured in the book. Copies are available at Craft Victoria, and also via the handmadelife online shop. Be sure to check it out!

Continuing on from my 2008 collection, the 2009 collection will continue to explore the bizarre and quirky world of my animal kingdom, introducing new 'characters' and experimenting with new ideas. Below are some of the new pieces plus more to come!

The Odd Couple (2009). Material: Plastic, silver, bi-colored synthetic quartz, rose quartz beads.

Marshmallow Overload II (2009). Material: Plastic, silver, cubic zirconia, reconstituted turquoise beads.

This piece is a variation of 'Marshmallow Overload' from the 2008 collection. The cubic zirconia is a darker pink combined with reconstituted turquoise beads, giving the piece a little more contrast in color. Not for the faint hearted...

As i am expanding my line of jewellery, i've created this site to share my about my designs, events, and recent press that i am involved in. It has been an amazing start since uni, and in this blog i have introduced pieces from the 2008 collection which were produced during my final year in uni and also new pieces for the 2009 collection that i am working on now. My exhibition collection consists of pieces that are more conceptual and elaborate. I embellish them with cubic zirconia to make them more fantastical and majestic, satisfying my urge for overindulgence.

Artist Statement

Traditionally, jewellery has always been a symbol of wealth, status, and religion, as well as for adornment. My work aims to divert the preciousness of the jewellery from its material towards its emotional influence.

My intention is to create quirky little characters that become my jewellery, each with a different story to tell. The sparkly jewels add an element of mystery and curiosity to the pieces, suggesting tales of adventures and treasures, of mystical lands and magic spells.

The aim of my work is to trigger the imagination, and remind us that sometimes life does not have to be taken too seriously. Maybe everyone needs a little frivolity to help us get through the unfamiliar and the sometimes-uncompromising times in life. I believe in the imagination. I believe there is a child in every one of us, and I hope my work would be able to bring back that little magic into our lives and remind us of the many impossible things that we so truly believed in when we were little.

“Bunny slippers remind me of who I am. You can't get a swelled head if you wear bunny slippers. You can't lose your sense of perspective and start acting like a star or a rich lady if you keep on wearing bunny slippers. Besides, bunny slippers give me confidence because they're so jaunty. They make a statement; they say, 'Nothing the world does to me can ever get me so far down that I can't be silly and frivolous.' If I died and found myself in Hell, I could endure the place if I had bunny slippers.”
